Entry #2. A World That Is Meaningless-Signalis

Video games have always been intriguing in several ways. They create stories, worlds, and characters that you might have imagined. They offer something new, beautiful, and sometimes even terrifying. Today, I want to talk about the story of Singalis. It's a retro-futuristic survival horror game created by Rose_engine. A game that makes you question everything, even the smallest detail.

In the game "Singalis," the world is depicted as meaningless. The player takes on the role of Elster, an android who wakes up from hypersleep following a crash landing on an unknown planet. With no other choice, Elster leaves the ship and eventually discovers an underground facility where the game truly begins. While there is much to say about the gameplay, the focus here is on the story.

The story of Signals is about how far a person will go to keep their promise. The world of Signails isn't really accurate; it was never real to begin with. Elster and the player have already been through the crash several times. The world keeps resetting itself every time Elster doesn't complete their promise. Even when Elster dies, the world resets. Only when you complete that promise, a promise that she only knows. However, the questions arise from this. How far are you indeed able to complete a pledge? Even if it meant that everything around you was meaningless.

In the very end, it's up to you, the player, to decide what the best outcome is. Perhaps there's a way to end the loop. Singalis also deeply drives into what topics I didn't cover. The game covers topics such as what is desired out of love and the meaning of death. Which adds more to why Signalis is a masterclass of an indie game. As said before, video games are enjoyable. I highly recommend this game, even if this is your first game. Not just the game, the story is one for the books.

  1. This game sounds so cool!! I’ve been wanting to get into more games, I love the feeling of finishing a really interesting game and thinking about it for weeks. It almost feels more intense than a good movie or book that affects you, I think its the personal connection to the characters that you get to play and having to work hard on certain aspects of the game creates a stronger connection emotionally. I’m definitely planning to play Singalis, the way you explained it has me for real hooked.
